A Change In Weather, Among Other Things

Two weeks ago, I'd just returned from Croatia.  While the weather there hadn't exactly been warm, our trip had been favored with almost entirely sunny weather and clear skies.

We got back to Prague in time to watch the transition begin from autumn to winter.  That first week back, all you could see out my window and on the walk to the metro was fall colors.  Reds, oranges, yellows and browns were falling all over the place, blowing around in the wind and piling up under trees and on sidewalks.  I make it a habit to try to find the crunchiest leaves to step on as I walk along.  Katherine and I agree - it probably has something to do with growing up in a place that doesn't get autumn.

But since then, the weather has deteriorated.  It's foggy now, mists obscuring the top of the nearby TV Tower from view, and even preventing us from seeing the Prague castle complex from our building on dreary mornings like today.  It hasn't bothered to rain yet - the sky just graces us with a drizzle that leaves you wondering whether your umbrella is even worth it.

And the chill in the air seems to be laughing at my attempts to keep it at bay - my layers, my coat and gloves and occasional hat.  I've learned what it means to be uncomfortably cold.  It's this feeling you get in your inner ear, where the cold settles in and radiates, not letting you focus on anything else until you make your way somewhere warmer.

My inner ear?  Really, cold?  Hit me while I'm down, why don't you?

But, I'm learning to adjust.  Bought some more thick socks to wear under my boots, and my tolerance towards cold might actually be increasing!

And global warming is probably helping - last Sunday dawned with clear skies and weather in the 60s.  It was inexplicable and unexpected, but not unwelcome - it was nice to be able to walk to the city center without a coat on, for once!

I don't anticipate another day like that, though, until I make my way back home for a Christmas on the beach.  And I'm excited for it, though today marks the official 'one month left' mark.  It's too soon.  Yeah, I've traveled, I've had amazing experiences, I've met some wonderful people.  But there's no way that I arrived 3 months ago.  Maybe 3 weeks.

Anyway, will be making the most of my last 4 weeks.  Tonight I'll be seeing LADY GAGA, then I leave for Venice on Saturday morning.  Then the weekend after I'm going on a field trip with one of my journalism classes to learn more about Roma.  After that, it'll be December - I'll spend a weekend in Vienna looking at the Christmas markets, then rush to get all of my work finished, and then I'll be on a long plane ride back to the states.

And all of this is happening too soon!
