Apologies for my slowness. But now that that's out of the way, I'll tell you about the past few weeks! Munich for Oktoberfest was fabulous, and it was great to see my friend Jori, who I hadn't seen in months.
Then the 'rents and Greg invaded Prague. They are the luckiest weather witches I have ever met. Currently, it's 45 degrees F outside and cloudy. It's been raining. But while they were here? In the 60s and sunny practically every day. Why they insisted on stealing such beautiful weather for me, I don't know. But I miss sunshine and 80 degree weather - I'm glad this semester is going to end with a beach Christmas!
So, the fam was here, and we had a lovely weekend of exploring Prague (hopefully, by now, their legs have recovered from walking literally the entire city). Now, I'm being pulled down the drain that is mid-terms week. This past weekend was spent vaguely studying and writing papers, but mostly sleeping - was feeling sick on Thursday and promptly took that as an excuse to sleep almost the entire day on Friday. I needed a chill weekend, if nothing else than for preparation for the next few weeks.
On the subject of my work, I'm currently working on two profiles of Czechs - one on the economist Tomas Sedlacek, and the other on the art curator Otto Urban. The one on Sedlacek has been absorbing my attention for over a week already, but I think it's going well. My first draft of the Urban piece is due this week, but since it's only a first draft I've been having trouble focusing on it instead of other things. I also have a paper due for my Contemporary European Theater class, which I can't bother to be worried about, and a test in my Introductory Czech class, which should be fun.
If my profiles turn out well, I'll try to post them here after doing some edits on them. In fact, if people are interested, I can post a few of my pieces after I get feedback from my professors - let me know.
In other news, fall break starts this weekend. It has been a topic of high stress recently, since everyone's trying to do the coolest thing they can think of, and people who put it off are freaking out about not having plans, etc etc. I probably should be more worried about everything than I am - Liz, Emily and I have a bus ticket to Novi Sad, Serbia, on Friday afternoon. And that's about it. We had a Balkans Eurail pass booked, but had a bucketload of trouble with that, and then the plane ticket we had back from Bucharest, Romania was canceled last week (which ruined the plans of about half of the students in my program, I believe).
So, our plan is to get down into Serbia and buy tickets for our itinerary once we're there, because our research tells us that it's vastly cheaper to buy once we're in these countries. Also, we want our schedule to be pretty flexible, so we can do whatever sounds coolest and basically wander our way through a few countries. It sounds exciting and whatnot, but I do assure you all that we will be constantly vigilant and make sure we get home mostly on time (hopefully).
Anyway, I wish I had something more creative or exciting to report, but I don't. Will try to think of something fun to post before I leave later this week!
